Last April, we needed to change our Athens flight to another city because of the changes in our plans and we decided on Venice for past mid-September. We went there with minimum expectation because it’s one of the most popular destinations and we thought it could be overrated. We didn’t get a chance to read something or make a plan; we had known that we wanted to eat good Italian food, get a gondola ride and walk the city without rush. It turned into a perfect trip with lots of surprises and the most romantic one!
Here are my notes about Venice;
1- Go to Venice in Autumn to catch perfectly captures! Our first day was cloudy. We took more than 100 photos, and all of them are beautiful. But we didn’t like our sunny second day photos too much.
2- Hotels are too expensive. I recommend you to find a hotel in Mestre where you can arrive Venice in only 20 mins by bus or train. We left finding a hotel to the last minute, couldn’t find anywhere in Venice budget-friendly, and we stayed in Mestre.
3- Walk, walk, walk! Don’t use the canal taxi or bus if you don’t have to. Venice is a small town you can explore by walking. There are lots of things you can miss if you use public transport.
4- Get a gondola ride! Yes, it’s not cheap, but it’s a once in a lifetime experience, and it was terrific as it looks!
5- Take a spritz break every corner. It’s my favourite in Italy. Drinking and seeing lots of people with a glass of spritz somewhere in the afternoon make me happy!
6- Watch the sunset on the Dell’Accademia bridge. It was fantastic! The best sunset view ever <3
7- You will see masks everywhere; it’s Venice’s icon. Choose and buy one! You can find them at all the souvenir shops, but also there are a few artist shops you can visit and see the artist making them. I bought the one below and strongly recommend the store “Benor Venezia”! The figure on the mask is Pantalone, an Italian commedia character as a Venetian merchant who loves money so much!
8- Try takeaway pasta! Tuttinpiedi and its smoked prawn and spicy tomato pasta was perfect.
Venice was a fairy-tale city we never wanted to leave. Every corner we turned, there were lots of canal views, and all of them were like paintings. We were talking about the beauty of this fantastic place all the day and dreamed of living there.
One last thing; leave yourself to the romantic atmosphere, and feel Venice.
Hope to see this beautiful city again,
